Making your own scavenger hunt

With the oppatt.io generator you create a GPS scavenger hunt that players complete on their own phone. You place locations on a map, write a clue or question for each one and share the result as a link. Players walk to each spot and the next clue unlocks when their phone detects that they have arrived. The generator is meant for anyone who wants to set up a hunt for a birthday, a school outing, a team day or a walk with friends, without technical knowledge. Everything happens in the browser, so neither you nor the players need to install anything.

Time to create 5 to 15 minutes
Cost free
App required no, everything runs in the browser
Account required only when saving
Number of locations 3 to 20

How to make one

  1. Choose the area - Search for a town, street or park, or zoom the map to the area where the hunt will take place. This sets the starting view for you while you build the route.
  2. Place locations - Click on the map to add a marker at each spot players need to reach. Drag a marker to correct its position if needed.
  3. Write clues - For each marker, type the clue or question that players will see. This is what guides them to the next spot or asks them to look at something on site.
  4. Set the order - Drag the locations in the list into the order players should visit them. The first location is the start; the last one is the finish.
  5. Save and share - Save the hunt to your account and copy the link. Send it to players by message or email; they open it on their phone to start.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create an account before I can start?

No. You can open the generator, place locations on the map and write your clues without signing in. An account is only required at the moment you want to save the hunt and get a shareable link.

How do I add a location to the hunt?

Click or tap on the map at the spot where you want players to go. A marker appears and a panel opens where you enter the clue or question for that spot. You can drag the marker afterwards if the position is not exactly right.

Can I change the order of the locations later?

Yes. The locations are shown as a list next to the map and you can drag them into a different order. The numbering on the map updates automatically so the route always matches the list.

How accurate does the GPS position need to be?

Phone GPS is typically accurate to about 5 to 15 metres outdoors. Choose spots that are clearly recognisable and not too close to each other, so players can tell which marker they have reached. Indoor locations and dense city centres are less reliable.

Do players need to install an app?

No. Players open the link you share in the browser on their phone and allow location access when asked. The hunt runs entirely in the browser, on both Android and iPhone.

Can I test the hunt before sharing it?

Yes. After saving, you get the same link that players will use. Open it on your phone and walk the route yourself to check that every location triggers correctly and that the clues make sense on site.

Can I edit a hunt after I have shared the link?

Yes. Log in, open the hunt from your overview and change locations, clues or the order. The link stays the same, so people who already have it will see the updated version the next time they open it.
