You want colleagues from different departments to talk to each other, spend an afternoon outside the office and come back with something to talk about on Monday. Hiring an external activity for 25 people quickly runs into a lot of money and fixed time slots. A GPS scavenger hunt you build yourself fits the date, the location and the people you already have: teams of four or five walk a route of 8 to 12 stops, answer questions on their phone and finish at the bar or restaurant you booked. You decide the theme, the pace and how much of it is about your own company.

How it gets used

Friday afternoon team outing

Start at 15:00 from the office, send teams of five through the neighbourhood for an hour and gather at a bar at 16:30. No transport, no booking, and colleagues who arrive late can still join a team on the way.

Onboarding a new group of hires

Ten new colleagues walk past the canteen, the warehouse, the IT desk and the parking exit while answering questions about who does what. After 45 minutes they know the building and have spoken to each other properly.

Break during an off-site or conference

Between the morning workshops and dinner, teams of four explore the town around the hotel for 60 minutes. The finish is the restaurant, so the timing takes care of itself.

Company anniversary or year-end event

Build a route with questions about the company's history, old office locations or well-known projects for groups of 40 to 80. Teams that finish first can be announced during the drinks afterwards.

Practical tips

Mix departments deliberately when forming teams; four people who do not normally work together is the point of the afternoon.
Put the finish at the place where you have booked drinks or dinner, so nobody has to wait for stragglers in the street.
Add two or three tasks that require a photo of the whole team; these are the pictures that end up on the intranet.
Ask one colleague to be the point of contact by phone during the hunt for teams that get stuck or lost.

Frequently asked questions

Plan on one to two hours of desk work: choose 8 to 12 locations, write a question or task for each and set the start and finish points. Walk the route once beforehand if you can; this takes about the same time as the hunt itself.

Yes, a hunt with 8 to 10 stops takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes, which fits between a morning session and a shared lunch. Set the finish at the restaurant or venue so everyone arrives at the same place.

Split the group into teams of four to six and stagger the start by a few minutes, or let teams begin at different stops. Ten to twelve teams can run the same route without waiting on each other.

Participants open the hunt on their own phone via a link or code; no account is needed on their side. One phone per team is enough, so colleagues without a work phone can join a group.

Every question and task is written by you, so you can mix questions about the surroundings with questions about company history, products or colleagues. This works well for onboarding groups or anniversaries.

Keep the total walking distance under two kilometres and choose stops that are reachable by paved paths and with places to shelter, such as a covered shopping street or station. An indoor version in a large office building or museum is also possible.
