Ouders

You're organising your child's birthday party or a family outing and you want an activity that gets 8 to 12 kids outdoors, moving and working together for about an hour, without you having to run it every minute. A GPS scavenger hunt does that: the kids walk a route you've drawn, their phone tells them when they've reached a stop, and a clue or question appears. You decide where it goes, how long it takes and what the questions are about. Set it up the evening before, start it at the party, and end at the table with the cake.

How it gets used

Birthday party in the neighbourhood

Ten kids, two teams, eight stops between your front door and the playground. Questions about the birthday child at each stop, and the final clue leads back home to the presents.

Family reunion with cousins of all ages

Split 25 relatives into mixed teams so the 7-year-old and the uncle end up on the same phone. Use photo questions about family history so the grandparents have something to contribute.

Campsite or holiday afternoon

Draw a loop around the campsite or through the nearby village and send the kids off after lunch. You get an hour on the terrace and they come back with a story.

Sunday walk the kids agree to

Turn the usual forest walk into a hunt with 6 stops and a riddle at each one. Same 3 kilometres, a lot less complaining.

Practical tips

Keep stops 100 to 200 metres apart for younger children; any further and they start asking if they're there yet.
Test-walk the route yourself once, or check it on the map, so you know every stop is reachable without crossing a busy road.
Ask one other parent to walk with each team. It keeps things safe and gives you someone to hand a phone to.
End the hunt at the spot where the food is. Kids who finish first will wait if there is something to wait for.

Frequently asked questions

Most parents set up a hunt with 6 to 10 stops in 15 to 30 minutes the evening before. You pick the spots on a map, type a clue or question for each one, and you're done. No printing, no hiding envelopes under bushes.

From about 6 years with an adult walking along and reading the clues aloud. From 8 or 9, kids can run a team on their own with one phone. Teenagers manage the whole thing themselves and usually want a harder route with more questions.

A birthday party of 8 to 12 kids works well split into 2 or 3 teams. Each team needs one phone with GPS and a data connection, usually a parent's phone or an older sibling's. For a family reunion of 25 to 30 people, make 5 or 6 teams and mix the generations.

Anywhere you can walk: your own street and the park around the corner, the campsite during the holidays, the woods behind grandma's house, or the town centre on a Saturday afternoon. You choose the stops yourself, so you control how far the kids go and where they cross roads.

For 6 to 8 year olds, aim for 45 minutes to an hour with 6 to 8 stops close together. Kids from 9 up will happily go 1 to 1.5 hours. Plan it so the last stop is back at your house or the picnic spot where the cake is waiting.

Yes. Parents use it for a Sunday walk that the kids would otherwise refuse, for a grandparents' anniversary with cousins aged 5 to 15, or for a rainy-holiday afternoon in the nearest town. You can reuse a hunt or copy it and change the stops for a new location.
