Whether you run a football club, a scout group or a music association, someone has to come up with an activity for the youth camp, the open day or the end-of-season party. You want something that gets 20 to 100 people moving, needs little supervision and does not eat up a weekend of preparation. A GPS scavenger hunt on your own grounds does that: teams of 4 to 6 walk from checkpoint to checkpoint, solve tasks about your club and your area, and are back in 60 to 90 minutes. You build it once and reuse it every year.

How it gets used

Scout and youth camp

Fill a Saturday afternoon at camp with a hunt around the campsite and the nearby woods, with tasks like building a knot or finding a landmark. Fifty children in ten teams keeps leaders free to walk between points instead of leading each group.

Season kick-off for youth teams

Mix new and returning players from the U9 to U13 teams into teams and send them across the pitches, changing rooms and canteen. In an hour they know the grounds and each other's names before the first training.

Open day and member recruitment

Give visiting families a short 30-minute route with 6 checkpoints that ends at the sign-up table. Parents see the facilities, children try a task at each stop and volunteers only need to staff the start and finish.

Anniversary and fundraiser

For a 50th anniversary or a sponsor run, build a route through the village that passes the old clubhouse, the founder's street and sponsor shops. Adults and children can join in mixed teams and finish together at the party tent.

Practical tips

Test the route yourself the day before with one phone; you will catch a checkpoint that sits behind a fence or a question that is unclear.
For groups under 10, keep teams to 4 players and 8 checkpoints; for camps of 60 or more, add a start interval of 3 minutes between teams.
Put the last checkpoint at the canteen or the barbecue so the hunt ends where the rest of the programme continues.
Ask two members of the youth committee to write the questions; they know which club stories and inside jokes land with the players.

Frequently asked questions

Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for a hunt with 8 to 10 checkpoints if you already know the route. You place points on the map, add a question or task per point, and share a link or code with the teams.

Yes. Split them into teams of 4 to 6, give each team one phone and let teams start a few minutes apart or from different points so they do not cluster at the same checkpoint. Ten to twelve teams on a campsite works fine.

One phone per team is enough, so a leader or an older member can carry it. Younger groups often have a leader hold the phone while the children solve the tasks.

GPS positioning works without mobile data. Have teams open the hunt while they still have signal, and keep checkpoints at least 30 to 50 metres apart so the location check is reliable under trees.

Yes. A hunt around your clubhouse or usual campsite can be saved and reopened for the next intake, open day or camp. You can swap a few questions so returning members still see something new.

You write the questions yourself, so you can ask about the founding year, a trophy in the cabinet or the name of the canteen volunteer. Clubs also place a checkpoint at a sponsor's shop for a fundraiser or anniversary event.
