Gemeenten

You want people to spend longer in your town centre, find the places outside the main street and come back with a story. Guided tours only run at set times, printed walking maps end up in a drawer, and hiring a company for an event costs budget you would rather spend elsewhere. A GPS trail built by your own team lets residents and visitors explore on their own schedule, in small groups, on a route you control. It works for a Saturday in July as well as for a class visit on a Tuesday in October.

How it gets used

Heritage and monument days

During Open Monument Day or a local history weekend, a trail links 12 buildings that are otherwise only mentioned on a plaque. Visitors start from the town hall or museum at any time during the day, so volunteers are not tied to hourly departures.

Town centre and shop street promotion

A route that passes the market, three independent shops and a café keeps visitors in the centre for an extra hour on a Saturday. Ask the shopkeepers a question about their shop front or history and let the final stop hand out a small reward.

Primary school programme about the town

Groups 5 to 8 learn about their own municipality by walking past the old fire station, the war memorial and the river lock. One trail serves every school in the municipality and can be repeated each year without new preparation.

Welcome route for new residents

Around 200 to 400 households move into an average municipality each year and rarely know where the library, the sports park or the recycling point is. A short 45-minute trail in the welcome pack shows them, with a coffee at the community centre as the last stop.

Practical tips

Keep the route between 2 and 3 kilometres; families with young children and older visitors lose interest after about 90 minutes of walking.
Test the trail on a Saturday afternoon with a colleague and one family before publishing, so you catch spots where a parked delivery van blocks the view of the clue.
Put the starting point at a place with toilets and parking, such as the tourist office, the library or the museum, and mention that on the poster.
Check the texts every spring: shops close, murals are painted over and a fountain that is switched off in winter is a poor spot for a question.

Frequently asked questions

No. The trail runs on the participant's own phone using GPS, so questions appear when they reach the right spot. Nothing needs to be mounted, maintained or replaced after a storm or a Saturday night.

Plan for one afternoon: pick 10 to 15 locations, write a short question or story for each and set the route on the map. Once it is live you can leave it running for a season or several years and adjust texts when a shop changes hands.

Yes, and this is where it works well. Put a poster with the link at the information stand, and families can start whenever they arrive between 11:00 and 16:00 instead of waiting for a guided tour at a fixed time.

You choose the stops, so a question in front of the cheese shop or a final task at the museum entrance is entirely up to you. Many municipalities agree a small reward with two or three local businesses to close the route.

A class of 25 to 30 children splits into groups of 4 or 5, each with one phone and an accompanying adult. A route of 2 to 3 kilometres with 10 stops takes about 75 minutes, which fits a morning programme.

You can create a version per language, for example Dutch, English and German for a border region or a coastal town. Visitors pick the one they want from the same starting page.
