You want your students to remember the lesson, and you know that happens more easily when they stand at the spot itself than when they look at a slide of it. A GPS hunt lets you attach your questions to real places: the war memorial for history, the ditch behind the school for biology, the market square for a maths lesson on area and scale. Students walk in small groups, the phone shows them where the next stop is, and your questions appear when they arrive. You spend a lesson period outside without having to hire anything or ask someone else to organise it.

How it gets used

History walk through the town centre

Ten stops at buildings, plaques and street names that appear in your unit on the 17th century or the Second World War. Students answer a question at each stop and you discuss the route back in class the next day.

Biology fieldwork in the park

Mark six trees, a pond and a hedge and ask groups to identify species, count insects or note soil conditions. A double period of 90 minutes is enough for observation and a short write-up.

Introduction week for new first-years

Send groups of four past the gym, the library, the staff room entrance and the bike shed with a question at each spot. In one hour new students know the building and have talked to three classmates they did not know.

Maths on the schoolyard

Use the fence, the goal posts and the flagpole as measuring points for questions on perimeter, estimation and scale. A 45-minute period fits eight stops within the school grounds.

Practical tips

Walk the route yourself the day before and time it; students take about 1.5 times as long as you do.
Put the most difficult question halfway, not at the end, when attention is still there.
Give each group a paper backup with the addresses of the stops in case a phone battery dies.
Book the same 90-minute slot for a follow-up lesson in class; the answers students collected are your material for that lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes for a route of 8 to 10 stops if you already have your questions written. Placing the points on the map and typing the questions is the main work. Walking the route yourself once beforehand adds another half hour but saves trouble on the day.

No. One phone per group of three or four is enough, and it actually works better because students have to talk about the answer. In a class of 28 you need about 8 phones.

Yes, you write every question yourself, so you decide the content. A history teacher can ask about the year on a facade, a biology teacher about the tree species at a specific spot, a maths teacher about the height of the church tower using shadows.

Keep the route compact, for example within 500 metres of the school, and stagger the groups by two minutes at the start. Set a fixed end point and end time, and give every group a card with your phone number.

Yes, a route stays available so you can run it with next year's class or hand it to a colleague. Check it once before reuse, because a shop may have closed or a sign may have been moved.

It works anywhere with GPS reception outdoors, so the schoolyard and the sports field are fine. On a small area keep the stops at least 20 to 30 metres apart so the phone can tell them apart.
